The Medici family have left an indelible mark on Tuscany that is still felt today, centuries after they were at the peak of their powers. One of the most compelling is the story of the mysterious death of Isabella de' Medici, the beloved daughter of Cosimo I de’ Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. Famously beautiful and free-spirited, she was a well-known Florentine figure who died suddenly and unexpectedly at the Medici villa in Cerreto Guidi in 1576 during a hunting holiday.

According to her brother, "while she was washing her hair in the morning ... She was found by Signor Paolo Giordano on her knees, having immediately fallen dead.” This unlikely and dubious version of events was doubted and, according to information obtained by the Ferrarese ambassador, Ercole Cortile, she was actually "strangled at midday" by her husband in the presence of several named servants. It is thought that her husband, Paolo Giordano, killed Isabella because of an affair that she had had with Troilo Orsini or that her brother, the Grand Duke Francesco de’ Medici actually had ordered her death.

The small, picturesque town of San Miniato was located on the important via Francigena during medieval times, linking it with northern Europe and Rome. It was also located on the route between the Lucca-Siena and Florence-Pisa roads, giving it a wide range of influences from around Italy as well as abroad.

Yet this interesting town's history goes even further back than that, because archaeologists have found evidence that the city has been settled since the Paleolithic era, surviving through the Etruscan and Roman periods. This rental was clean, airy, spacious and well supplied. There were insect screens on the doors and a large parking place. There was a private outside dining area and private sun beds. There was free use of the pool, which was exceptional, exactly as shown in the photos and which was shared with the family living in the house of which the rental was part. The whole site is in a wood and accessed via a steep dirt track - a car is essential. Everyone was very friendly and we enjoyed our stay here.

Het enige minpuntje is het weggetje naar boven toe. Over een goede 100 meter lijkt het op een opgedroogde rivierbedding met veel losliggende keien.
Verder was alles top. Huis ligt bovenop een heuvel met veel privacy. Fijn zwembad. Huis heeft geen airco maar blijft relatief koel. Eigenaar woont ernaast maar zie of hoor je nauwelijks.
Supermarkten en restaurants kun je in het dorp vinden.
Steden zoals Lucca, Florance, Pisa liggen op max 1 uur rijden. Voor ons een ideale uitvalsbasis voor stedentripjes.
