The territory surrounding the city of Pisa with its famous Leaning Tower is vast and varied. The lands that surround it are many and very different, but they are all recognized by a heartfelt belonging to this ancient province which is certainly not made up solely of its, albeit solemn, Pisa.

The landscape of these typically Tuscan countryside is characterized by gentle hills interspersed with lively plains and even important waterways, such as that of the Arno. Here nature and human hands have come together for the conservation of an extraordinary landscape. First of all, there is nature that gives precious thermal waters and harbingers of relaxing holidays, as in Casciana, San Giuliano and Uliveto; there is the nature of the beaches for everyone, from Marina di Pisa to Tirrenia, passing through Calambrone and Marina di Vecchiano; Then there is the nature of the silent and evocative countryside - the one that has as its backdrop places of peace such as Fauglia, Orciano or Lajatico, with its Theater of Silence, in fact -; there is the pristine one of the San Rossore Estate, where the scents of the pine forest welcome a rich fauna. A nature that welcomes the presence of man in the hills dotted with farmhouses and cypresses and on Monte Pisano, designed by mule tracks, terraces and hiking trails.

It is in these same countryside that the strong peasant origins of this territory are preserved: the numerous farms that produce wine, oil, fruit, but also wheat and sunflowers provide quality products that ensure that the food and wine of the Terre di Pisa is heterogeneous and characterized by details that make it unique. Among the excellences to mention there is undoubtedly the IGP oil from the Pisan Mountains; not to mention what the Terricciola vineyards offer, for example, or the places touched by the Pisan Hills Wine Route in general; San Miniato products such as white truffles or malachio, a Slow Food presidia sausage; beach honey; the derivatives of Mucco Pisano and wild boar; as well as the many recipes handed down for generations and today wonderfully reviewed by some chefs.

The ability to transform valuable raw materials into top products is the same as that of the artisans, who in this area still retain the desire to make a living from a job done with skill. This is the case of the cities of ceramics such as Montopoli and Calcinaia, of the woven baskets in Buti and of the furniture of Cascina and Ponsacco, but also of the Leather District, the area of ​​Castelfranco, Santa Croce, Santa Maria a Monte, which emerges for processing of leathers.

The craftsmanship has sublimated into art in Pisa, a city that does not end in its Piazza dei Miracoli, but whose beauty is made up of characteristic squares such as Vettovaglie and Pera, museums and its poetic Lungarni. The art of these areas, which is a continuum throughout the territory, does not disdain modern and contemporary works as well: ranging from Calci, with the monumental Certosa which houses the Museum of Natural History, to Vicopisano and Pontedera. Equally worthy are the villages scattered around the countryside, which often surprise with important museums: for example Capannoli, Chianni, Lari, Palaia and Peccioli.

Finally, there is another common thread that unites all the localities of this area and that is the best way to get to know it in depth. Intense and lively are the folkloristic events, village festivals and historical re-enactments, which know how to bring out what truly is the soul of the Terre di Pisa.

  How To Make Brigidini, A Favourite Tuscan Cookie

Brigidini are thin, yellow-orange coloured cookies, not unlike waffles, that come from the village of Lamporecchio, near Pistoia. You will find them at almost every fair, events and food festival that takes place in Tuscany, often made fresh, right in front of you. They are one of the oldest sweets still made today in Tuscany and have even come to symbolise the region. Like many well-known products of Italian cuisine, they seem to have been born from a mistake. Local lore tells that they back to 1300, when Sister Brigida, made a pilgrimage, from her country of Sweden, to Tuscany.   La Notte D'Isabella: Go Back To The 1500s In Florence In July 2019

The Medici family have left an indelible mark on Tuscany that is still felt today, centuries after they were at the peak of their powers. Works of art, buildings, and even towns remain as a mark of their incredible legacy but so, too, do stories. One of the most compelling is the story of the mysterious death of Isabella de' Medici, the beloved daughter of Cosimo I de’ Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. Famously beautiful and free-spirited, she was a well-known Florentine figure who died suddenly and unexpectedly at the Medici villa in Cerreto Guidi in 1576 during a hunting holiday.

According to her brother, "while she was washing her hair in the morning ... She was found by Signor Paolo Giordano on her knees, having immediately fallen dead.” This unlikely and dubious version of events was doubted and, according to information obtained by the Ferrarese ambassador, Ercole Cortile, she was actually "strangled at midday" by her husband in the presence of several named servants. It is thought that her husband, Paolo Giordano, killed Isabella because of an affair that she had had with Troilo Orsini or that her brother, the Grand Duke Francesco de’ Medici actually had ordered her death.
