Property Description

The splendid independent Villa San Giuseppe is the result of a careful restoration of an old country house.

The house faces one of the most enchanting and intense views of the entire Val d'Orcia. Located halfway up the hill of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, it favours a privileged position between the valleys of Amiata. At any time of the year, it is possible to admire the continual stream of clouds, rays of sun and the light mist, even from the early hours of the morning, and also take in the array of nature among the hills, mountains and rivers, which make this location unique. Thanks to the careful restoration by architect Lensi Orlandi Cardini, the villa now has an exceptional number of windows of varying sizes. Through these windows you never lose contact with the splendour of the view that surrounds the house.

The distinct characteristics of Sienese houses with their stone walls, vault ceilings and terracotta floors were left untouched, but the house was enhanced with paintings, photographs, sculptures and various contemporary works of art whose owners are among the most important emergent Italian collectors. Inside the villa, many works of art, including Giacinto Cerone, Federico Pietrella, Basilè, Andrea Aquilanti, Cannavacciolo, can be found.

The environment is extremely subdued and the minimal furnishing lends itself to blending in with the allure of contemporary art.

Both the villa and the estate are named after the local landowner, Giuseppe Martelli. The entire property, located in the Montalcino area, had been abandoned until 1950 when the current owners took over.

The estate spreads over approx. 12 hectares of land south of Castelnuovo dell'Abate and includes a fermentation and ageing cellar built on three levels with a gravity system and is equipped with the best systems for the biodynamic production of Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino red wines. The vineyards and olive groves extend over 10 hectares of the land.

With the convenient location of the villa, it is easy to reach the Abbey of Sant’'Antimo and the historical centre of Montalcino while remaining immersed in the magnificent landscape and in absolute retreat from everyday life.
