Fiesole's Forgotten Gem - San Martino A Mensola

San Martino a Mensola is a lovely parish church in the Renaissance style, in Fiesole, Tuscany. Although it is small, the art and architecture of the building is surprisingly rich and grand. The first church on the site dated to the Roman era and was a ruin by the 9th century. It was then that the Bishop of Fiesole ordered its restoration. This building, too, barely remains with the current structure dating to the 15th century. Another of the draws to the building is a rather unique relic which remains inside and miraculously intact. This is the body of St Andrew, an Irish saint, which has refused to decay in the centuries since his death. If you have an interest in such macabre things, or pretty churches stuffed full of Renaissance art, find a luxury villa in Fiesole and have a wander around this fascinating building.

Despite having no living area this apartment was quite good for 6 adults who each had a two seater car. The cars could be parked off street and the bus to central Florence is outside the front gate. The apartment was not as clean as one would expect. It looked rather grubby with cobwebs in places. The dishwasher had not been unpacked and there was food in the bottom of the dishwasher so maybe it had not even been through a cycle. The kitchen is rather small making it difficult for two people to be in the room to prepare a meal. We had problems with the electricity failing a number of times and not being able to reset the circuit as the switchboard for the apartment was located in the other apartment on the same level. The hot water also failed one night. The property managers/agents, Sylvia and Thommaso were very helpful by attending promptly to fix any problem but it was inconvenient to have to contact them all the time.

L appartement est parfait. Je pense qu il serait important d avoir une bonne carte des alentours, des epiceries et des restaurants. Il dedrait y avoir du savons pour le lave linge et le lave vaisselle. L appartement est tres bien situe et une vue superbe. Il devrait repare l air climatise de la chambre avec la salle de bain, elle est bruyante. C est un aprt superbe a loue et abordable. A y retourner et a recommender. Au plaisir

The villa is of a very good standard, clean, well appointed, and with beautiful surroundings. The local bus service is very good and easy to navigate, and it only takes about 10 minutes to get into Florence, with about three buses per hour on average.

Our only reservation was that the description mentioned that renters would be able to access the swimming pool at the local hotel - this was true but the cost was extremely high (17 Euros per person, rising to 20 Euros per person at weekends) and there was no discount available for renters which we had assumed there would be from the website.

We had also hoped to be able to go for walks in the surrounging courntyside, but this was not really feasible and the road outside the villa leading into and out of Florence does not have pavements for the most part, so dangerous for families to walk along.

Having said this, overall we really enjoyed our stay and the accommodation itself was excellent.
Therefore, for a family of five with three boys (aged 14,13 and 11) in the very hot August weather, this was a bit of a downside as we had expected to be able to go swimming before/after sightseeing and this was not affordable.
