Start off your walking holiday here with a visit to the stunning Frignoli Botanical Gardens in Fivizzano, located 850 metres above sea level. It's home to some exotic and ancient trees and the air is filled with the aromatic smells of strawberries, blackcurrants and raspberries. It’s open to the public from 15th April until the 15th September every day and the rest of the year it’s open only on weekdays.

On your walking travels, include a walk around the colourful scenery that envelops Squincio Lake in the Apennines, on the border between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna.
Feast your eyes on the beauty of richly coloured buttercups, king cup flowers and the unusual patterns of the bulbous water reeds. It’s worth walking to the nearby artificial Lake Padule which hosts a diverse flora environment also.
There are well signposted trails all over this area and some towns in the mountains offer expert guided tours for those to who want to experience a more challenging trek.
Visit the interesting old fortress and museum in the village of Coreglia Antelminelli, tucked high into the hills. The museum displays a fine selection of local artisan work as well as providing an extensive history of the area. On the Pistoia side of the Apennines, there are plenty of thrilling land and water sports for tourists to engage in as well as some delightful natural spas and cultural attractions. If you’re here during the winter months then why not spend a day or two whizzing down the popular ski slopes of Abetone and Doganaccia di Cutigliano? Throughout the rest of the year, these slopes are ideal for some challenging walking and mountain biking trails!

Visit the relaxing hot springs beside the town of Bagni di Luca to ease the aches and pains of your long treks. Walk over the famous Devil’s Bridge that has a very interesting legend attached to it that you can learn about in a related article. Why not sit back for a delicious evening meal here and try some of the famous beef from cattle that were bred in the Apennines? It’s called white beef as it has perfectly white fat veins running through the bright red meat.
