The River Arno passes through this picturesque region on its way from Mount Falterona down to the city of Florence. St. Romuald built his hermitage at Camaldoli and St. Francis of Assisi built his sanctuary at La Verna which has become the headquarters of the Franciscan order. It’s a huge tourist attraction now where visitors can see how St. Francis lived and view some of the artefacts he left behind.

The biggest towns in this region are Bibbiena and Poppi and are surrounded by smaller towns and villages including Castel San Niccolo, Pratovecchio, Stia and Montemignaio that each have something special to offer tourists. There are many forest and woods in this area, consisting mostly of fir and beech trees.

The ancient woodlands are rich in flora and fauna with over 1300 species growing here! There are horse trails that connect most of these important medieval sites across the Casentino region where tourists can see for themselves, the simple yet flourishing lifestyles of those who work as artisans or farm the land in the towns and villages.

There are signs of art and history wherever the visitor goes in this region. There are plenty of remnants of Medieval and Renaissance in the form of castle buildings and town layouts.

Several of Italy’s greatest artists hailed from the Della Robbia School in Casentino including Sandro Botticelli, Andrea della Robbia and Bicci di Lorenzo. A lot of their work is displayed in churches and museums across the district.
