Main Church of Lucca
Begin the day with a visit to the majestic Cathedral of San Martino in which a relic of a tragic love story lies. A sculpture of a nineteen year old Italian beauty called Ilaria del Caretto is here, she is laid out for her funeral, her peaceful face looks as though she’s only sleeping. She died after giving birth to her second child and her grieved husband, Paul Guinigi, couldn’t bear to see his wife’s beauty hidden beneath the ground. So he commissioned the famous sculptor, Jacopo della Quercia to immortalise her by creating this awe inspiring masterpiece. This is truly a place for you both to feel the power of true love! Beside the cathedral there is a superb museum where you both can learn all about the fascinating history of Lucca.

When you decide to stop for lunch, you’ll be spoilt for choice with all the wonderful Lucchese restaurants in and around the city. A tasty dish that is served on many menus here is a sea bass risotto and afterwards, who could decline a delicious Italian dessert like Buccellato di Lucca which is a type of fruit cake. Make this lovely meal complete with a fine bottle of local wine from Lucca's hills.
