View of Casale Marittimo
If you’re holidaying along the Tuscany coast, it would be a worthwhile venture to visit the beautiful stone built town of Casale Marittimo a few kilometres inland. Visitors have plenty of picturesque villas available to them and other rental accommodation in Casale Marittimo that offer stunning views of the colourful Tuscan hills and the coastline.

Casale Marittimo, built on the hill of Poggio al Bruno was awarded an Orange Flag Award, which is the ‘seal of tourism and environmental quality’ so visitors can be assured that a day trip here will be one of great enjoyment and interest.

One of the biggest tourist attractions in Casale Marittimo are the Etruscan tombs dating from the sixth and seventh centuries. It’s most famous tomb was discovered by accident in 1896 dating from the fifth century. It was one of a very wealthy Etruscan man who’s tomb was very decorative and even had a ‘thorlos’, a type of forged dome.
Another tomb that tourists would be keen to learn about here is that of a wealthy Etruscan family where the interior tombs were positioned in a circle, with the head of the family being placed in the most prominent position. Many artefacts were buried with them as towards the end of the eight century, the Etruscans had evolved their belief system to include placing objects with the dead for them to use in the afterlife. The famous ‘warrior princes’ statue was discovered here that was buried in the tomb also. Tourists would also enjoy a visit to a nearby site where two Roman villas were discovered in 1937, dating from a later period. This is a clear example of the transition of this area from Etruscan to Roman ownership which visitors can learn more about on guided tours of these fascinating sites.
After a morning of archaeological learning, visitors might enjoy a walk through the circular town of Casale Marittimo. Its streets lead up to the top of the hill in a spiral fashion and at the top, a spectacular view of the countryside and the sea can be admired. The view from here and the smell of salty sea air mixed with the fresh smells of blossoming vegetation is a treat for the senses!

Enjoy a tasty lunch of bruschetta drizzled with the local olive oil and served with juicy tomatoes. Casale Marittimo prides itself on its olive oil and like every other area in Italy; they claim it to be the best in the world so the only way to find out is to try it! This dish goes perfectly with the local "pancetta arrotolata", a spicy salty rolled bacon.

There are some fantastic hiking routes around the area for visitors to enjoy or even stroll around the town to see the Palazzo della Canonica, a fabulous 15th century building that was refurbished with added 20th century architecture. The nearby churches of St Andrew and St. Sebastian are filled with wonderful Renaissance architecture and frescoes and are well worth a visit. Tourists will love this welcoming town and are sure to agree that it is a day out well spent!
