The Vespa was invented in Tuscany in the town of Pontedera. A man called Enrico Piaggio came up with the clever idea of inventing a two wheeled vehicle that was cheap to produce and easy to operate. The name Vespa translates as ‘Wasp’ in English as it makes a distinctive sharp buzzing sound when it moves!
The Vespa was released to the public in 1946 and by the fifties it was fast becoming one of the most popular vehicles in Tuscany and by the sixties it was a national icon!
Its popularity worldwide sky rocketed when the classic film called ‘Roman Holiday’ starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck was released. Many scenes depicted the two of them riding around on a vintage Vespa through the streets of Rome.
