famous grapes of scansano
One of the world’s most famous wines, ‘Morellino di Scansano', comes from the village of Scansano. This is a peaceful treasure in the midst of a green forest, sitting contently on top of a hill overlooking a sea of green in the scenic Maremma area of Tuscany!

Why not treat your family and friends to a holiady villa on the Maremma coast for a week or two? You have so much surrounding you to explore, including this beautiful village of Scansano!

This little gem lies off the beaten tourist track yet offers an abundance of Italian cultural heritage to be enjoyed. This natural haven is close to picturesque sites of the Maremma area of Grosetto such as the Monti Dell’ Uccellina, the nature reserves enveloping Orbetello and Burano, secluded forest lined beaches on the coast and lovely islets sitting off the coast.

The village of Scansano is home to world famous vineyards that have successfully grown the Morellino grape to perfection and turned it into a deliciously smooth wine using their perfected technique, honed over the centuries.

Tourists will adore the panoramic views of the countryside that Scansano overlooks, it’s so peaceful and welcoming!

Start off your day with a walk around Piazza Garibaldi, the main square of the town which is filled with charming little eateries and locals going about their merry business. Visit the 'Museo della Vite e del Vino' where you can learn all about the history of Morellino wine and how it’s made.

Of course, the restaurants and shops of this area will happily let you try this marvellous wine for yourself or why not check out some local tours of the vineyards themselves where you might get to see the wine making process for yourself!

Admire the magnificent architecture of the church of San Giovanni Battista that dates back to the 13th century. It houses some spectacular works of art and sculpture inside that are most certainly worth a look.

Be sure to take a photograph of the grand Porta Grossetona, an ancient medieval white gate that still stands proudly as you walk into the town. Spend a magical evening listening to a beautiful classical or opera performance in Scansano’s Teatro Castagnoli, a superb way to end a day or two of exploring this heart-warming place.

Photograph the now privately owned Castello di Montepò and in the afternoon, why not stroll around the Museo Archeologico which displays many fascinating Etruscan artefacts among other finds discovered in the area. It’s housed within Palazzo Pretorio in the town centre.

Scansano is an ideal day trip to enjoy if you’re planning a Tuscan holiday to the Maremma region and is less than an hour’s drive from the coast. You’re guaranteed to have a truly enriching tourist experience here!
