If you’re lucky enough to be passing through this welcoming town in late August, be sure to stand well back and enjoy witnessing the famous barrel rolling race through the town called Bravio delle Botti! This takes place on the last Sunday in August between the eight districts or ‘contrade’ of Montepulciano.

Each contrada wears their own colours and are cheered along by their supporters as they attempt the gruelling feat of pushing a barrel uphill for a kilometre in the hope of winning the race! This thrilling event dates back to the 14th century and only in recent decades was this race changed from a horse race to a barrel one!
