Why not begin your day with a car trip to Elba’s largest town called Portoferraio which is located in the central area of the island on the Northern coast. Originally named Cosmopoli after Cosimo I de Medici who was given ownership of it by King Carlo V in 16th century, this fortified town became very prosperous due to its proximity to Elba’s valuable iron deposits.

Then head on towards the important fishing town of Marciana Marina by driving along the magnificent Northern coastline of Elba. It has over 2000 inhabitants, a quaint little marina, an ancient watchtower and two beaches.

This picturesque medieval town is tucked into a mountainous area of Elba, surrounded by chestnut trees. Take a cable car from here up to the top of Mount Capanne or walk along the ancient Via Crucis from the Pisan fortress up to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte.

Further up on the East Elba coastline is Rio Marina, once a thriving mining town and now a popular tourist haven.
