Of course, if you're going to visit and want to see the region properly, there is one activity that you won't want to miss out on: scuba diving. The view is as good underwater as it is above it and to only take in the view on land would be a crying shame!

More seasoned divers can have great fun in the waters of the Maremma, as there are many sites where the water is extremely deep and certain places, such as the shores of Giannutri and Giglio Island, are even home to sunken ships that can be viewed and explored.

For those new to diving, there are lots of schools in Porto Santo Stefano, which will be able to introduce you to both diving and the area. Porto Santo Stefano is also where you can easily rent scuba equipment, if you already know what you are doing. If the depths of the sea frighten you a little and you are not quite ready for scuba diving, just getting a mask and going snorkelling is also incredibly rewarding and will reveal a lot of the underwater beauty that this area has to offer visitors.

One of the highlights to keep in mind is the area around Giannutri Island as motorised vehicles are banned from the area and the only way in is in scuba gear. As a result, the sea environment is perfectly undisturbed and very beautiful. Check in advance before you visit, however, as the island only accepts a certain number of tourists a day.

If you are exploring the Maremma, do bear in mind that it is a part of Tuscany best enjoyed by traversing both land and sea!
