Tuscany has plenty of activities that adults are sure to enjoy but sometimes children in the group might become tired of waiting in lines or having to stay quiet and calm as they are marched through a parade of museums. An activity that is educational but will keep all ages and groups happy, whether you are holidaying as a family, couple, adult friends, or even on your own, is visiting an aquarium. This gives an opportunity to ooh and aah over the beauty, oddities, dramatics and humour of nature and see creatures that aren't readily visible out in the wild.
The aquarium of Livorno is an especially beautiful and interesting place, filled with many, many different species of aquatic life and located perfectly and centrally at the seafront promenade, just where the famous Mascagni Terrace begins. Once you have found a vacation rental in Livorno, this is just the place to spend a fun afternoon or to stroll through on a quiet morning.

The aquarium was first built in 1937 by Enrico Salvais and Luigi Pastore and was destroyed during WWII before being re-built. After 1999 it was closed again but was restored and eventually reopened to the public a decade later.
Today, the space is made up of various ponds and different underwater environments and displays and is home to over 2,000 creatures and 300 different species. The aquarium is divided across two floors with reconstructions of different marine environments on the first floor and the new tour "A New World", featuring insects, amphibians and reptiles, on the second floor.

The in-tank reconstructions include the recreations of the environments of the Mediterranean Sea, Indo-Pacific Sea, the bright Caribbean Sea teeming with different species, the rocky Tyrrhenian coast of Liguria, various tropical seas and a Greco-Roman archaeological Area, which contains a reproduction of a Roman shipwreck. You can expect to see different creatures such as turtles, Napoleonfish, blacktip reef sharks, jellyfish, clownfish, zebra sharks, starfish, seahorses, corals, camaleonte and morays.
With opening hours stretching from ten in the morning until eight at night during the summer months, a visit to the aquarium is the perfect activity to easily find time for during your stay or to keep yourself occupied when other things have already closed or are yet to open for the day. One of the highlights of an already charming town, Livorno really is a perfect seaside getaway in Tuscany!
