As we discussed in the last post, Follonica, or the “Miami” of Tuscany, is a beautiful, vibrant coastal city with plenty to offer visitors. However, one thing that it is particularly abundant in is wonderful beaches. With this in mind, we have rounded up a list of some of the best beaches in the city in a handy guide so that you can visit once you have found yourself the perfect villa with pool in Follonica.
3. Cala Violina
Cala Violina is a nearby beach that is considered one of the best beaches in the entire country and endlessly tops lists that back this claim up. A stunning soft white sand half-moon cove, it is located in the Golfo di Follonica right in the heart of the Riserva Naturale delle Bandite di Scarlino and the Le Costiere di Scarlino Area Naturale Protetta di Interesse Locale.

Completely unspoiled and beautifully preserved, it is another “spiaggia libera". However, don't think this means it will be empty. It is not a well-kept secret and crowds descend in summer. Named for the fact that when you walk upon the sand it supposedly emits musical notes that sound like a violin (when there isn't crowds drowning the noise out), it is well worth the visit. Visit early in the day or in the evening or outside the high season to get the best experience.
4. La Polveriera
La Polveriera, or the “Powder Magazine”, is another beach that is handily located very close by the city, just approximately 3km from the centre of Follonica. It is also another beach with waters that are quite shallow, making it a great place for families to bring their kids along to.

5. Cala Martina
Located about 7.5km from the centre of Follonica, Cala Martina is a remote beauty that is devoid of the crowds that can plague other beaches but isn't easily reached. You can park a distance away and cycle the rest of the way down the private road or you can make your way over from Cala Violina, which is a neighbour. Comprised of two rocky shore bays, this beach often pales in comparison to Cala Violina and it is a very different experience. It is not the typical beach one imagines of Tuscany and it is not an obvious beauty but you won't find the same kinds of crowds. You also won't find any facilities but you will get to uncover a charming little oasis of calm.
There are, of course, plenty of other wonderful beaches in the area but these are some of the beaches in this corner of Tuscany that we were most intrigued by.
