We've been talking about Florence a bit this week and, if you think about the city, what comes to mind: particular sights or attractions, specific restaurants or bars, certain works of art or buildings? Most likely, it is some sort of combination of all of the above, within the setting of the city itself, with its incredibly rich and beautiful historic centre.
Taking in as much of the city as possible, its pretty skyline, and many distinctive buildings, is a must for anyone visiting Florence – especially if it is your first time!

While you're planning, here are some of the best spots to take in the best views of Florence.

1. The Uffizi Gallery
So, it is highly likely that you'll be planning a visit to the Uffizi anyway – it is one of the biggest tourist attractions and important cultural gems in the city – but, while you're there, make the most of your trip.
The cafe up on top of the museum offers some pretty views, though these are somewhat restricted by the tall walls and the fact that you are not allowed to go close to the edges, but, if you pay attention, you'll find great views throughout the museum.
There are several spots that offer great vistas down the Arno and across different streets so be sure to peep through all the windows that you pass by as you explore the museum.

2. Forte Belvedere
This 16th century fortress is the second largest in Florence and its name literally means “Fortress Beautiful View”. Built under Bernardo Buontalenti for the Medici family, it is located high up on a hill within the grounds of the Boboli gardens, next to the Pitti Palace. Overlooking the River Arno, it was built here to strengthen a weak point in the walls that once entirely enveloped Florence. This position, however, also means that it boasts truly magnificent views of the city. It is especially lovely at sunset and at night and is where the famous mathematician and astronomer, Galileo Galilei, studied the stars and planets.
There are, of course, more wonderful places to take in incredible views over Florence so be sure to check out the following posts in this series to find even more spots to catch a sunset (or sunrise, if you're up for that on vacation!), take in the city as a whole, or get some stunning photographs by which to remember your trip.
