A ghost woman
In the last post in this series, we are rounding out our spooky Tuscan spots to get you in the mood for Hallowe'en. No matter what time of year you are planning your trip Tuscany – but especially during this creepy time of year – these haunted palaces, fascinating legends and spooky tales will never not be interesting. Here are more of our picks of must-see ghoulish destinations in Tuscany...

7. Brolio Castle's Terrifying Ghost

Brolio Castle, located in the Chianti region, in the province of Siena, is a beautiful architectural gem but is also home to an eerie legend and the ghost of Bettino Ricasoli, a rather fearsome spirit.
Brolio Castle
The castle belonged to the Ricasoli family since 1141 and was inherited by Bettino Ricasoli in the 19th century, who became a very important and powerful man in the Chianti region, was nicknamed, “The Iron Baron,” and terrified the farmers who worked on his land. He had no dramatic end but died of heart problems. However, after he died, things began to get weird. He was spotted on the grounds by many and then, at his funeral, there were stories that emerged of sudden bitter cold winds blowing through the crowd, doors and windows banging violently on their own, and the coffin not being able to be lifted. Tales of the man, still scarier after death, continue to crop up to this day. Just find a villa with a pool in Chianti, pay a visit and try to avoid him...or track him down...whichever takes your fancy!

8. Fosdinovo Castle's Tale Of Tragic Woe

Fosdinovo Castle, located in the town of Fosdinovo, on the border between Tuscany and Liguria, was where a tragic tale of a wealthy daughter from a noble family falling in love with a stable hand took place.
Fosdinovo Castle
Bianca Maria Aloisia, a member of the Malaspina family, lived in the castle during the mid fifteenth century and fell madly in love with a handsome young stablehand. However, she had been promised to a powerful knight from a nearby district and begged her father to let her marry her love. Instead, he send her to a nearby convent but this allowed her to continue to meet her lover in secret. However, when she fell pregnant, she was sent home in disgrace. In response, the stablehand was tortured and murdered and Bianca was tortured by hot irons being pressed against her skin, as a way to “repent” her sins. Refusing to apologise, she was tortured further and, eventually, bricked into a room and left to die. In recent years, a skeleton, matching the right description was discovered in the castle, going towards verifying the legend.

Tales of ghosts and hauntings continue to persist and, if you are interested in such things, it is a fascinating spot on the trail of creepy places throughout Tuscany, which, as this series has shown, there are plenty of all over the region.
