Take In The Incredible Sight Of Thousands Of Flamingos In The Orbetello Lagoon

Flamingos
We have previously written about the Orbetello Lagoon on several occasions. This coastal lagoon is one of Tuscany’s greatest treasures and is a diverse area of marshland that supports a varied and rich flora and fauna. Consisting of 1500 hectares of marshland separated from the sea on the west and east by two 6km strips of land and by the Argentario headland, it is an area that is both exceptionally lovely and incredibly unique near the coastal city of Orbetello. If you have found a holiday rental in Orbetello, there are lots of reasons to set aside some time to go and explore the lagoon but there is one particularly colourful and charming reasons: it is one of the best places in Italy to see a flock of pink flamingos en masse in the wild.
The stunning natural reserve of Orbetello Lagoon is partially comprised of a WWF-protected area – made up of the lagoon, a sandy tombolo, a pine grove, and cultivated fields – that is home to a wide array of wildlife and plants. Located along one of the most important migratory routes and boasting such a landscape, it is the perfect place to host over 200 species of water fowl, including ducks, grebes, and seagulls and also attracts some very rare migratory birds to nest there such as the white heron and our pal the pink flamingo.

If you want to spy some flamingos for yourself, you need to head to the area in autumn or winter, when you’ll find the greatest concentrations of aquatic birds, with over 4,000 pink flamingos among them. The Oasis of Orbetello birdwatching path is accessible from September to April either independently or with a tour guide and has 9 watch-points along a 1.2km route. There are two other trails that go through the area but both must be booked in advance. The tours are free, available only on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30am to 1:30pm. For more information on any of this, you can contact them at +39 0564 898829 or email them at oasiorbetello@wwf.it.

The sight of the vast numbers of pink birds is truly rather extraordinary and something that even those not usually prone to bird-watching can enjoy. Just find a vacation rental in Orbetello and come discover this incredible natural phenomenon and explore this stunning and untouched slice of natural beauty in Tuscany for yourself.
