Puccini Lovers: Find A Villa In Lucca Stat & Visit This Museum

For those interested in opera, a vacation in Italy at some point in your life is an absolute must. As both the birthplace of the genre and one of the major world capitals of opera, if you are interested in seeing the most incredible productions in the most spectacular historic venues, it is the destination for you. However, if you are a super fan of Puccini, in particular, and you were thinking of a vacation in Tuscany, then you should browse our villas with a pool in Lucca. Lucca has many claims to fame but one of its most lauded and famous sons was Puccini and for those who love him and his work, it is a special experience to walk streets that once inspired the artist. And, of course, you can't miss out on a visit to the Villa Museo Puccini, or Puccini House Museum.

Located at Torre del Lago, with an incredible view over Lake Massaciuccoli, the Puccini House Museum was Puccini's home and is now run as a museum dedicated to the great composer by his descendants. Not only is it a fascinating spot for those looking to learn more about the famous maestro and his life and work, it is also, in of itself, a beautiful and incredibly interesting architectural gem. Designed by the architect Giuseppe Puccinelli, this Art Nouveau looker was created in collaboration with Puccini himself and a host of great artisans such as Galileo Chini, the maker of the gorgeous fireplace in the main living space, and Nomellini, who painted the pictorial decorations on the walls.
Puccini left Lucca in 1880 to study at Milan music conservatory but was drawn back to his native Lucca upon completing his studies and from 1891 onwards decided to rent a lakeside property in Torre del Lago, an area located 15km west of Lucca, on the shore of Lake Massaciuccoli. He was completely enamoured with the place and, in 1900, he acquired some land and had his own villa built in the same area. Here he worked, indulged his great fondness for hunting, fished, and hosted bohemian artists. It was in this house that he composed the likes of Madame Butterfly, La fanciulla del West (1910), La Rondine (1917) and Il Trittico (1918) on the Forster piano in his front study and wrote his scores on the specially-made walnut table in the same room.

Spread over two storeys, the villa is a regular rectangular block, three bays wide, with simple and minimal geometric ornamentation. On the main façade there is a bow-window and a balcony over it that take in the pretty little Asian-inspired garden. The plush Liberty-style interiors that Puccini had such a hand in designing have been recently renovated and are almost preserved exactly as they were during his lifetime. They evoke the time in which its most famous owner lived in the villa, making them a particularly interesting spot for fans of the artist and a generally delightful place to wander and travel back in time for a little while, with guided tours offered every forty minutes.

Puccini happily lived in the villa when he wasn't away and travelling for work until 1921, when pollution that had been produced by peat works on the lake meant that he was forced to move to the coastal town of Viareggio, a few kilometres north. Villa Puccini is, ultimately, where he was laid to rest, however, in a mausoleum in the chapel on the ground floor of the villa, alongside his wife and son (who were later buried with him). For those wishing to pay their respects to the artist, this is, therefore, a key location in any Puccini itinerary of Lucca (as is the Puccini Birthplace Museum, his childhood home, in town). Plus, if you visit in July or August, you may be able to attend operas at the villa during the annual Festival Puccini.

So, if you are a serious opera-lover and fan of the work of Puccini, then this stunning villa is a must-see in addition to being a fascinating attraction in its own right as a rather extraordinarily lovely and well-preserved historic home. Be sure to swing by and admire the house, gardens, history, and view if you have found a villa with pool in Lucca and you find yourself spending some time in this stunning part of Tuscany .
