Balestro Del Girifalco: Travel Back In Time On Vacation In Tuscany

Tuscany is an inherently historic destination as it is a place where history is alive and well. Many towns have charming centres that remain relatively untouched by time, culture and art from the rich history of the region account for a vast majority of the most popular tourist attractions, and many ancient traditions persist to the current day. One such tradition is of large-scale local festivals, many of which involve processions and events while in historic dress that recreate the past. Among these various festivals and celebrations, usually referred to as sagre, there is the Balestro del Girifalco. This is a twice annual crossbow competition in the town of Massa Marittima that includes a grand procession in historical dress through the charming Old Town, medieval-style feasts, and more. So, if you love history and want to feel it truly come alive, or you simply love a spectacle, then be sure to attend this fantastical event if you have booked a villa on the Tuscan Coast and are spending time in the area around Massa Marittima.

One of the largest historic re-enactments in Tuscany, in fact, the Balestro del Girifalco dates all the way back to the 14th to the 15th centuries and centres around an event where a recreation of a crossbow competition takes place using scale replica bows from the period. Ancient documents from the area tell us of the crossbow competitions that took place in the town from at least the 14th century onwards and Massa Marittima has since taken this chunk of its history and pays homage to it very seriously indeed twice each summer.

On the fourth Sunday of May (so the 25th of May 2025) and the 14th of August each year, 24 competitors are chosen, with eight each representing the three terzieri (or districts) of Cittanuova, Cittavecchia, and Borgo, into which the town is divided. Each is armed with a scale replica crossbow and they gather in the Piazza Garibalidi, at the foot of the 14th century Cathedral of Saint Cerbonius. A target is placed 36m from the competing individuals and the aim is to get as close to its centre as it possible. The winning archer is awarded a golden arrow and a silk drape that is hand-painted by an artist is gifted to the winning district. For the May edition the competition kicks off during the afternoon, at 5.30pm and in August it begins at night, starting at 9pm.

Before the main event of the competition, however, there is another remarkable spectacle, a procession through the streets of the old town, to the cathedral, with more than 150 people in medieval dress. Musicians, the Compagnia degli Sbandieratori (a group of practiced flag-wavers who perform elaborate choreography as they walk), court ladies, and more parade through the streets of Massa Marittima. Feasting, parties, and more are also common occurrences throughout town for the duration of the event.

Quite the sight to behold and an utterly transporting, the experience of attending Balestro del Girifalco will send you right back in time to live the Middle Ages for yourself! If you are considering one of our vacation rentals on the Tuscan Coast and will be in the area on the 25th of May or the 14th of August then make a point to visit Massa Marittima and to spend a day time-travelling during your holiday in Tuscany!
