Only forty kilometres south-east of Pisa is the little town of Lajatico which sits on a hilly terrain at the opening of Val di Chiana. The Calendimaggio festival is a spectacular three day event that takes place in the pilgrimage town of Assisi just outside of Tuscany in the neighbouring region of Umbria!

Locals dress up in fancy costumes in the weekend following the 1st of May and the town’s two main districts, the upper side and the lower side compete against each other in a variety of fun challenges.

Visit the delicious ‘Frittelle Festival’ in Montefioralle on 15th and 16th March to try lots of tasty treats! Frittelle are delicious fried rice cakes that are cooked in a huge cauldron of oil in the main square of the village.

Witness the entertaining ‘Befanate Befanotti’ festival in the town of Piancastagnaio on the 5th January! Groups of local men dress up in old rags called befanotti and dirty their faces to look like beggars.

They then go from house to house offering to sing a lively begging song in exchange for gifts like food or money. Afterwards the jolly men gather together in the main square to divide up their earnings and eat some food while they laugh and chatter together. This unusual tradition is great fun to watch!

Festival in Impruneta
