This magnificent villa is located in one of the most beautiful positions of the Lucchese countryside, in an area of great natural beauty surrounded by acres of vineyards and olive groves. The views from the property are absolutely stunning and extending to the sea in the distance and to the plains of Lucca. Casale Santo Stefano has recently been restored by its discerning owners, who totally respected Tuscan traditions and provided it with a very well equipped kitchen. The interiors are very light, and each room on the ground floor has access to the outside terraces and pergolas that offer outdoor “al fresco” eating at its best. A special feature of this house is the lovely, furnished Loggia, converted from the old hayloft from which one can enjoy the panoramic views. Lucca is only 12 kilometres away, and the other historic cities such as Florence, Pisa and Siena, and even the Versilian coast, are within comfortable reach for day trips.

China Massagli (pronounced KEE-nah Mah-SAH-lee) is a unique Tuscan liquor that was first created in the nineteenth century by a one doctor Massagli, who was the owner of a pharmacy in Piazza San Michele in Lucca. Originally sold as a medicinal beverage during the Malaria epidemic of the 19th century in the city, it is now a local tipple that is a must-try for any foodie that has found a vacation rental in Lucca and is exploring the gastronomy of the city.

One of the main ingredients of the drink, from which it partially gets its name, is China Ginebona Officinalis. Also known as Jesuit's bark, the plant contains quinine, an ingredient used to fight fever and malaria, which is still sold in pharmacies to this day.
