Compignano is a beautiful estate located on a southwest slope in the foothills of the Apuan Alps overlooking the sea to the west and Pisa to the south. The ancient six acre farm, terraced with olives, figs, and fruit trees, is within the woodlands of a national park. It is secluded and exceptionally attractive. The entry to the large stone farmhouse and the barn, situated at the centre of the estate, is down a private road. The main building is now divided in two totally independent parts sharing, together with the barn, a 6x12 metres swimming pool on its own protected terrace, a short distance from the houses. The three of them have been designed in a way that each property keeps its own privacy and independence. Compignano West has been recently bought by a London-based couple who use it as a summer residence and rents it in other periods. They took great care in refurbishing it, with particular attention to the kitchen and bathrooms, all newly renovated in marble. The original Tuscan character has been kept, with beams, terracotta floors and an ancient carved stone fireplace, yet it has been furnished in a comfortable contemporary style. A special feature of Campignano West are the fine front terrace at the first floor level and the furnished pergola in the garden, from which one can dine watching the sun set over the hills. All four bedrooms have private bathrooms.

A nice population had settled here prior to Roman takeover but went on to thrive during the Roman Empire reign because of its scenic geographical position. Massaciuccoli is connected to Luni, Lucca and Pisa via the River Magra and River Arno.

Lake Massaciuccoli is a lake in the Province of Lucca, Tuscany, that is home to a wildlife oasis in a marsh. While the wildlife and vegetation may have shrunk substantially since the 20th century, the lake is still an area of great natural beauty and bounty. There is much to see and do and the surroundings are pretty alright too.

A boardwalk extends over the edge of the lake and all around it, allowing you to readily and comfortably explore the flora and fauna that can be seen blooming and frolicking around the lake.

Not a particularly challenging walk, it offers a chance to get out and about and stretch your legs in a wonderfully scenic setting, without having to take on an incredibly strenuous hike; something that those with younger kids, limited mobility or less will, to appreciate.

The walled city of Lucca is a stunning medieval gem that is full of incredible buildings, palaces, churches, pretty, little side streets and winding alleys, works of art, cultural hotspots, and historic beauties. However, it is not just the city that is rich in history and culture, the wider province around Lucca is full of little gems and fascinating surprises. One such gem is Massaciuccoli Romana, an archaeological complex that is home to a wide variety of ruins and remains from the time of the Romans including villas, baths, and more.

Located in the municipality of Massarosa, on the banks of Lake Massaciuccoli, the first indications of the Massaciuccoli Romana complex were first discovered back in 1756 though there wasn’t much public interest or involvement from the larger academic world until the 19th, and then the 20th, century. A Roman lead pipe inscription (a Latin inscription that is found on leaden Roman water pipes and which provides information on its manufacturer, owner, and often the reigning emperor) was found in 1770 and then the western sector of another group of structures was discovered in the 1930s, which included a balneum (a thermal plant built for private, rather than public, use) and mosaics, that were deemed to be part of a villa. In the 2000s the work at Massaciuccoli Romana was officially taken up and continued under the authority of the Municipality of Massarosa. The Municipality also opened the site as a tourist attraction and museum in this time period and continue to promote education, research, and excavation on the site to this day.

2015 is the Year of Archaeology in Tuscany and, due to this there are many events taking place which celebrate the history of the region. Each summer in Tuscany, there are countless food festivals, one in almost every town and something on somewhere in the region each weekend.

This traditional passion for food and the commemoration of the rich historical heritage of Tuscany are being combined this summer in a series of special events, tours, shows, exhibits and dinners.

Try Lucca's Local Tipple, China Massagli!

China Massagli (pronounced KEE-nah Mah-SAH-lee) is a unique Tuscan liquor that was first created in the nineteenth century by a one doctor Massagli, who was the owner of a pharmacy in Piazza San Michele in Lucca. Originally sold as a medicinal beverage during the Malaria epidemic of the 19th century in the city, it is now a local tipple that is a must-try for any foodie that has found a vacation rental in Lucca and is exploring the gastronomy of the city.

One of the main ingredients of the drink, from which it partially gets its name, is China Ginebona Officinalis. Also known as Jesuit's bark, the plant contains quinine, an ingredient used to fight fever and malaria, which is still sold in pharmacies to this day.

We rate the property very highly. The building is spacious, bright and very comfortable. We were a party of 7 (planned to be a party of 8) and were delighted with the roominess. The furnishings inside are attractive and comfortable. The four bedrooms are bright and offer plenty of privacy from the rest of the villa. There are four roomy bathrooms, finished in light marble, bright, clean and modern. The ceramic tiles and marble on the floors are beautiful. Our party included 2 children, ages 3 and 4, who very much enjoyed the space for toys and playing. The kitchen is well-equipped, bright and modern, and there is an ample supply of attractive flatware, glasses and china.

The setting for the villa, on a forested hillside, is perfect. The veranda facing the valley, the hills opposite, and the sunset is the
strategic feature and social centre of the villa. The view is so spectacular, day and night that it is difficult not to spend all your time in admiration of it. The grounds of the property are beautiful and well maintained with an interesting variety of trees and other vegetation. The swimming pool area is immaculate and sheltered.
I must also mention the property management team who looked after the cleaning, maintenance and operation of the facility. Without exception they are charming, efficient and helpful, and set a high standard for hospitality.
