If you’re holidaying in the valley of Casentino in Tuscany then perhaps taking a few day trips around the region would be an excellent way to see all that this abundant area has to offer! About twenty minutes drive from the large town of Bibbiena is the town of Pratovecchio. The centre of this charming commune is named Piazza Paolo Uccello, after the great Renaissance artist who was born here in 1397. There are two monasteries in this town; a monastery of the Camaldoli Monks which was founded by the Guidi Counts in the 12th century and the monastery of the Dominican monks of Santa Maria della Neve in the 16th century.

Pratovecchio is famous for its exquisite Tuscan dishes. Why not stay for lunch here in a restaurant called ‘La Tana Degli Orsi’ which has been well reviewed by visitors. Try a popular dish called ‘Tortelli sulla Lastra’ which is essentially a large ravioli stuffed with a mixture of pumpkin, garlic, bacon, potato and percorino.

Poppi Castle is a fascinating building in Arezzo that is beautiful and rich in history and steeped in bloody legend. First mentioned in 1169, when it belonged to the Abbey of San Fidele de Strumi, it was likely built over an earlier structure. designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, the architect of Florence's Palazzo Vecchio, it came into the possession of the Conti Guidi in the 1190s and had some alterations over the years. The castle was involved in some important historical events throughout the centuries including two famous Tuscan battles – the Battle of Campaldino and the Battle of Anghiari – and it is this link to the Battle of Anghiari that allowed for a very interesting exhibition in the castle. We have talked about Poppi Castle before but only to discuss the grisly legend of Matilda, the most beautiful woman in the area that was married off young to an old powerful man from the Guidi family, who ruled Tuscany with an iron fist.

None too fond of her husband and jealous of the freedom of the common people, she began sending for eligible young bachelors to come to Poppi Castle to do repairs or entertain her. Each evening, she would choose one of these men to come to her chamber to spend the night and the following morning, to avoid having her adultery discovered, she pushed them through a trapdoor where they fell to a bloody death among razor blades and broken glass. When the number of missing young men began to be noticed, rumours of Matilda spread and, legend says, the townspeople stormed the castle. Matilda was trapped in a tower of the castle and the door was bricked up, leaving her to starve to death.

La casa di Annarita si trova in un grazioso borgo ristrutturato in località Valagnesi ed è a circa 5 km. dal paese di Pratovecchio.La pace e la tranquillità sono assicurati!La casa ha un sapore rustico e come tale va considerata,anche se necessita di un po' di manutenzione. Annarita è molto disponibile ed è un'ottima cuoca!Ha preparato per noi(12 persone)una cena tipica veramente gustosa (ad un prezzo ottimo) e ci siamo sentiti come a casa nostra! All'arrivo ci aspettava una torta molto buona per la colazione e un vasetto di marmellata fatta in casa!Con qualche piccolo accorgimento nella manutenzione la casa può diventare un luogo di grande relax e mi auguro che Annarita corregga quelle piccole imperfezioni che sminuiscono il valore della sua casa. Concludendo, la nostra vacanza è stata splendida !!

Die Vermieterin hat für unsere Reisegruppe auf Nachfrage zu einem sehr guten Preis-Leistungsniveau ein italienisches Menü zubereitet. Durch die abgelegene Lage im Nationalpark sind Einkaufsmöglichkeiten und Gastronomie nicht in Fußreichweite erreichbar. Die erhöhte Hanglage erlaubt dafür einen schönen Ausblick auf das die Täler und Berghänge des Casentino. Ein kleiner Swimmingpool ermöglicht sportliche Betätigung für Kinder.

We have enjoyed our stay in Annarite very much. We've named her the best
landlord/hostess ever. She knew very quickly who her guests were, when we
past her house. It's a comfortable house with a bathroom for each family.
Totally perfect. It's a pity that for some many people there is no
dishwasher and just one fridge. There is enough of glasses and cutlery. *
*It might be useful to add the hight of the location, as it was pretty
chilly in the evening, which wasn't expected by everybody.
