Nel Segno Di Leonardo: Exploring A Lost Da Vinci In Poppi, Tuscany

Tavola Doria
Poppi Castle is a fascinating building in Arezzo that is beautiful and rich in history and steeped in bloody legend. First mentioned in 1169, when it belonged to the Abbey of San Fidele de Strumi, it was likely built over an earlier structure. designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, the architect of Florence's Palazzo Vecchio, it came into the possession of the Conti Guidi in the 1190s and had some alterations over the years. The castle was involved in some important historical events throughout the centuries including two famous Tuscan battles – the Battle of Campaldino and the Battle of Anghiari – and it is this link to the Battle of Anghiari that allowed for a very interesting exhibition in the castle. “Nel Segno di Leonardo” is an exhibition that will take place until the 6th of January 2019 in the Castello di Poppi that uses exciting multimedia displays to showcase one of the most famous and hotly debated paintings of Italian art of the sixteenth century, “La Tavola Doria degli Uffizi”.

Depicting the fight for the banner, the central scene of the story of the Battle of Anghiari, the image is a sketch of the lost legendary fresco that Leonardo began painting on a wall in Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio in 1503 but left unfinished and only remains as copies. One of these is the Tavola, an anonymous 16th century sketch that is named for the noble family who bought it and kept until 1940. Many attributions to various artists have been made and the work has a long history of wandering the world after being illegally exported from Italy, going between Germany, the United States, Japan, and Switzerland, before returning to Tuscany in 2012.

This exhibition explores this mysterious and fascinating work and its history and tries to answer the many questions that remain. Those interested in in-depth looks at the history of art and mysteries must make a point to visit if they are spending time in a vacation rental in Tuscany over the next few months.
