Savour Some Tuscan Slow Foods

View of Valdarno
If you have a passion for food then there’s no better place to come than Tuscany for your dream culinary inspired holiday! Learn about the ‘Slow Food Movement’ which took place in Italy during the 1980s. It was a stance against the fast food industry which was threatening to smother traditional high quality food products that were made in small towns and areas across the country.

There's plenty of beautiful holiday rentals in Garfagnana, Pistoia and San Giovanni Valdarno to cater for visitors wishing to stay and explore the area for a few days. These areas also provide wonderful examples of the following exquisite slow food products
Selection of the strong flavoured Pecorino cheese
‘Pane di patate della Garfagnana’ is a tasty soft potato bread that comes from Serchio Valley and can be found in local towns like Barga and Bagni di Lucca. It’s made by mixing 85% wheat flour and 15% mashed potatoes into whatever quantity is desired, and adding water and seasoning until a soft dough is formed.

It’s slowly cooked in massive loaves that can weigh up to two kilograms! It is then sliced and often served as a tasty snack with cured meats and cheeses.

If you enjoy sampling new and exciting cheeses then you’d love a piece of ‘Pecorino della Montagna Pistoiese’ to stry!

This is a strong flavoured cheese that is made from the milk of Massese sheep which are grazed on sweet grass pastures. Only the raw milk and rennet are used in making this pecorino to give it a distinctive taste.

Visitors can buy it at two stages of maturity; fresh which is only two or three months old or mature which is anything over a year. This particular cheese can be enjoyed in many shops and restaurants in the famous Abetone ski resort which is located close to the summer grazing pastures of the sheep that help produce it.
Juicy Valdarno chicken
In San Giovanni Valdarno, visitors can enjoy a delicious poultry dish that is made using the organic chickens that are reared here. ‘Pollo del Valdarno’ is a species of chicken that's bred here which have sturdy thighs and a small breast.

They have pure white feathers and produce delicious ivory coloured eggs with large rich yellow yolks. They are slowly grown for four to six months and for this reason their meat is soft and juicy to eat. Visitors would thoroughly enjoy tasting the difference in the quality of this meat compared to a cheap chicken bought in a supermarket.

These are only several of the slow foods that are most famous in Tuscany so read through our other articles to learn about the rest of them and perhaps become inspired to plan a gastronomic themed Tuscan holiday!
