If you decide to spend a few exciting days in the Versilia region of Tuscany, it would be worth your while to visit the picturesque town of Camaiore, situated at the foot of the Apuan Alps. Visitors have a choice of beautiful tuscany holiday rentals with swimming pools in Camaiore and all around the stunning Versilia region.

Begin a day of exploring Camaiore with a visit to the museum of Sacred Art here, filled with exquisite painting and artefacts. Stroll around some of the town’s oldest buildings, including the Collegiata di Santa Maria that dates back to the early 13th century and is in the shape of a Latin cross.
Delicious white lard of the region
Only a short walk away from Camaiore town is the quaint little hamlet of Gombitelli that boasts spectacular views of the mountains of Versilia. Enjoy learning about one of the area’s most popular food products that’s made here: It’s the famous pink camaiore lard.

It is a traditional salami that got its name from the pink veins that run through it. It’s made from the fatty section of a pig’s back and is made into a white rolled sausage shape. It is then seasoned by rolling it in a blend of salt, pepper, garlic, rosemary and left to cure on marble blocks tilted at a slight angle.

This would be a tasty addition to a lunch in the mountains and is usually enjoyed spread thickly on freshly baked bread or crispy toast. Washed down with a glass of delicious local wine, this meal is a great way to refresh and energise you for an afternoon of trekking!

Enjoy a walk along a path in a nearby pinewood to the popular tourist attraction called Grotta all’ Onda. This huge cave was once the home of the ancient human species called Neanderthals and later by Homo sapiens. The ground inside the cave is very flat and provides tourists with an intriguing history of how these cave people lived. It’s open all year around and the entrance is free.

If you wish to stretch your legs in the evening, why not walk along part of the famous Via Francigena from Montemagno to Pontemazzori that runs close by to Camaiore town. Along this route you will see the ruins of what was once the magnificent Castle of Rotaio. It was once surrounded by massive triangular walls and witnessed many bloody battles between Tuscan provinces many centuries ago.

A lovely way to finish the day would be to visit the archaeological museum in Palazzo Tori Massoni back in Camaiore town to admire the many artefacts dating back to Etruscan, Roman and Medieval times to learn more about this area’s history.
