For a beach to earn a Blue Flag award, they must abide by thirty two rules and regulations. They are examined before every season and must continue to follow the rules to hold onto their award.
Two beaches that have this award beside the town of Cecina in the Val di Cecina area for example, must provide clear information to the tourist about what it means to be awarded a Blue Flag beach, a map of the beach’s facilities and amenities and have clean and well maintained toilets.
The seawater quality must meet with high standards and a drinking water facility must be available to the public.
Nearby marine life and coral reefs must be strictly protected and a good transport system must be in place, to and from the beach. Lifeguards must be on duty between certain times and at least one Blue Flag beach in each municipality must be wheelchair accessible.
