If you’re touring through the scenic province of Massa Carrara on your next vacation to Tuscany then be sure to stop off in the famous town of white marble called Carrara! Situated on the Carrione River, this thriving town is twinned with the neighbour town of Massa.

Together, Massa Carrara, as they are commonly called became a huge marble mining industry which exported this precious stone throughout Italy and Europe.

The white or blue vein marble excavated from the nearby mountain quarries is famous the world over. The famous Pantheon building in Rome is constructed from Carrara marble as it's the Michelangelo’s David which stands proudly in the Galleria dell‘Accademia in Florence.

Many stunning buildings, monuments and piazzas throughout Carrara town are exquisitely finished in polished marble and gleam under the warm Tuscan sun.

The cathedral of Carrara is by far the finest marble masterpiece of the town towns with its decorative carved details on the interior and exterior of the building.

Walk through some ornate piazzas in Carrara called Piazza Alberica and Piazza Garibaldi. The 17th century Piazza Alberica is built close to the town walls and was lined by grand palazzos of the noble families of Carrara.

This cobbled marble square has a spectacular fountain in the middle with a striking statue of a lion within it. It is trapezoidal in shape and is a fine example of marble architecture in the town.

Stroll along the triangular Piazza Garibaldi where you will see a large statue in the middle honouring Giuseppe Garibaldi, a famous Italian patriot. Other sites worth visiting include the Ducal Palace, the Church of the Suffragio and the Convent of San Francesco.
