Monticchiello di Pienza originated in Roman times but expanded more during the Middle Ages. It fought frequently with the nearby town of Montepulciano over territory until Siena city eventually intervened and made peace between them. Since then Monticchiello di Pienza flourished in the local industries of handicrafts and artisan products.
