When my family decided that they wanted to visit a winery the very next day, late in the afternoon, I spent a rather panicked evening researching somewhere that suited their rather demanding stipulations and would be able to take us on such short notice.
I eventually (after much hair pulling and cursing under my breath) found Agriturismo Frascole and saw they did daily tours and tastings and were about a half hour drive from our villa. I rang early the next morning and they were able to take us at 3, as I requested. Little did I know how fortuitously excellent a selection it would prove to have been.
The road up to the winery was not easy. However, Frascole is located near the charming town of Dicomano, high up in Tuscan Apennines in the middle of an unspoiled area of natural beauty. The historic buildings, surrounding fields of the vineyard and incredible views over the mountains and valleys below were truly breathtaking.

I could not have chosen a better location if I had tried. Praise is not uncommon from my parents but is hard-earned from my siblings, yet everyone raved over and complimented my choice. The visit was probably the highlight of our whole week in Tuscany.
Agriturismo Frascole has foundations with ancient origins and a winery has been on the site for centuries but the current iteration of the business has been in the same hands since the 1990s. An organic, small-scale producer, they make several white and red wines, as well as an award-winning Vin Santo and an olive oil that was the best we'd ever tasted but had long-since been sold out for the year.
Upon arrival at the vineyard, we struggled to find anyone as the office was empty and as were all of the public spaces. It turned out everyone was hard at work actually making wine! However, after a wander, we found the staff members and our informative tour of the vineyard, cellar and property began.

We then moved inside for the good part – the tasting! There are three types of tasting packages; a free package that allows you to sample 2-3 wines, a 9 euro (per person) deal with 4-5 wines and an 18 euro deal with more wines and snacks. We went for the middle-range package as we were planning on eating properly soon after and it turned out to be the perfect choice. We had a lovely time, got a tiny bit giddy and then were released back outside where we wandered a little and took pictures of the incredible surroundings before heading home.
I cannot say enough nice things about the setting of the winery, the pretty buildings themselves, the lovely staff members and the wine itself. Devoid of tourist crowds, well off the beaten path, charming and cosy, this is the spot that I would recommend to anyone looking to learn about and taste some excellent Tuscan wines. For more information, see their contact details below and let them know that that strange Irish family sent you if you pop along! Just find a vacation rental in the Florence area and set aside a day to pay a visit.
