There are several reported stories of the origins of the Negroni cocktail. One of the most popular and supported stories recounts that it was, supposedly, invented in Florence in 1919 at Caffè Casoni (now called Caffè Giacosa). Count Camillo Negroni asked the bartender, Forsco Scarselli, to strengthen his favourite cocktail. His regular Americano, was suddenly transformed by adding gin rather than the normal soda water. To help differentiate between the old and new, the bartender also added an orange garnish rather than the typical lemon garnish of the Americano.
After an endless stream of customers came and asked for the drink and the cocktail skyrocketed in popularity, the Negroni Family founded Negroni Distillerie in Treviso. They then produced a ready-made version of the drink, sold as Antico Negroni 1919. The distillery is still open today, though under the ownership of a new family, and the drink is now readily available in Off Licences worldwide.
However, there is nothing quite like the real thing, made fresh, particularly if you are enjoying it in a sunny piazza while holidaying in Tuscany. Just try out the following recipe and sip on a Negroni as you browse our luxury villa in Florence and plan your vacation.
Ingredients:
The Negroni is made with a 1:1:1 ratio of ingredients so whatever volumes necessary work, as long as used in this proportion. For example, however, this would make one cocktail:
20ml of Gin
20ml of Sweet Vermouth
20ml of Campari
1 fresh orange peel
Method:
1. Choosing the spirits correctly is half the battle with the Negroni. For Vermouth, the sweet Cinzano Rosso is a good choice and for gin, the clean and classic London Dry works well.
2. Fill a short rocks glass with ice and then layer up the three components. If you add the gin first and then the darker spirits, the colour changes are pretty and impressive.
3. Stir with a straw or bar spoon.
4. Garnish with an orange peel or add a slice of orange if you would like a more distinct citrus note.
