Among the truffle festivals of Tuscany, the San Miniato Truffle Fair is, without a doubt, the most famous and well-known example. Taking place over the course of the last three weekends of November (the 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27 of November 2022), the annual Mostra Mercato Nazionale del Tartufo Bianco fair, sees the entire town turn into one big foodie celebration. Usually the Piazza del Duomo, one of the main town squares, is dedicated to the truffle with different booths selling various truffles, truffle dishes, and truffle products. Then, throughout the rest of the town, other piazze become occupied by open-air markets with all sorts of other local products and dishes on sale. In addition, there are a wide variety of other events over the course of the festival, including live music, cooking demonstrations, talks, events for kids, and much more besides. While San Miniato is a relatively small town, it does produce around 25% of Italy's white truffles, and its fair is the major truffle festival in Italy and maybe even the world. If you’re a serious fan, you won’t want to miss it but even if you find a villa in San Miniato anytime in October, November, or December, you’ll be landing right in the middle of truffle hunting season and will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy delicious truffle dishes outside of the festival itself.
Of course, while San Miniato is a major centre for truffles and truffle-lovers, it is not nearly the only place to try truffles or to attend festivals dedicated to them! Many other towns also host their own truffle festivals, which might even be preferable if you are someone who prefers to get a little bit off the beaten track, avoid tourist crowds, and go for slightly more unique experiences. A list of just some of the other truffle festivals taking place in Tuscany this year include:
- Fiesole’s Truffle Festival, which stretches from the 1st to the 25th of September 2022, and the stunning town itself that you can easily visit on a day trip if you find a luxury villa in Florence.
- La Serra, a town to visit if you find a villa with pool in Pisa, hosts their festival dedicated to both the white truffle and Porcino mushroom from the 23rd to the 25th of September 2022.
- Corazzano, another town in the province of Florence, has a white truffle fair of their own from the 1st to the 2nd of October 2022.
- Balconevisi, also in the province of Pisa, has another white truffle and mushroom festival from the 15th to the 16th of October 2022.
- Those who find a holiday rental in Prato around the 22nd to the 23rd of October 2022 can attend their Tartufiera or truffle fair.
- The Truffle Festival of the Sanminiatesti Hills takes place in the town of Ponte a Egola in Pisa from the 29th to the 30th of October 2022.
- San Miniato Basso in Pisa holds the Festival of the Pinocchio Truffle from the 5th to the 6th of November.
- San Giovanni D’Asso, in the province of Siena, hosts the Exhibition of the White Truffle of Crete Senesi from the 12th to the 13th and the 19th to the 20th of November 2022 and can be readily attended by those who find a villa in Siena.
All of these events also generally take place on an annual basis so while these dates will apply for 2022, they will take place around the same time but on slightly different dates in following years.
