Italy has a long history of being one of the major art centres of the world and this continues to be true to this day. In addition to exhibiting some of the most incredible masterpieces in museums, churches, and palaces around the country, hosting amazing temporary exhibitions of the works of some of the most remarkable contemporary artists around the globe, and continuing to educate new artists in academies and universities, Italy also famously plays host to major art showcases on a regular basis. Among these, the biennale in Venice and the biennale in Florence are two of the largest and most celebrated examples. Florence will next host a biennale in 2027 and, as of this week, more information about the 16th edition has been released. For art-lovers looking ahead to a stay at one of our gorgeous villas in Florence, it is a great reason to book for October next year...

Florence Biennale 2021

Held every two years since 1997, the Florence Biennale has hosted beyond renowned participating artists such as Marina Abramović, David Hockney, Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Gilbert & George, Anish Kapoor, and El Anatsui thus far. The Fortezza da Basso in Florence is the main exhibition venue for the Florence Biennale, which is then equipped with spaces that have been specifically tailored to the needs of the participating artists. Additionally, however, there are satellite events promoted and organised by the festival in other public and private spaces around the city.

The 2027 edition of the Florence Biennale will be held from the 23rd to the 31st of October 2027, marking the 16th edition but 30 years of the event. This edition, therefore, will not only be a celebration but a chance to look back and reflect on the history of the event and its larger influence on the international scene of contemporary art and design. Its theme will be Beyond the Sense of Time, which is part of the continuing curatorial path that has been developed by Giovanni Cordoni in recent years. This theme is further broken down into three main lines, including Memory, Caducity (the awareness of transience and limitation), and Eternity, giving the participating artists touchstones through which to explore the past, present, and future and to transform time into something that can be seen and shared.

As our perception of time has been massively altered by technology – keeping the past alive and easily accessible at all times, looking ahead to the future, losing time in the real world through immersion into online algorithms, and more – in recent years, this is a theme that is rich with meaning and contemporary ideas and anxieties. Alongside the exhibition, it will all be explored further through a diverse schedule of lectures, premieres, award ceremonies, educational programmes, and more.

Applications are currently open so no programme has yet to definitively be decided but as the festival has a history of hosting world-class artists and designers, they are sure to put together a dynamic and exciting event. Serious art-lovers around the world, therefore, should keep Florence in mind for a holiday in 2027. Always a massive art centre, it will be even more rewarding to book a luxury villa in Florence come October 2027...
