Santo Stefano, paramount crossroads to embark for the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, is Monte Argentario’s largest and port town. There are spectacular views from the 17th century Spanish fortress. For those wishing to take just a dip without taking the car, "La Cantoniera" and “Il Moletto"can be reached by foot with a short walk. A few minutes drive away is Porto Ercole, Caravaggio’s final resting place, where you can sip an aperitif absorbing a glamorous retrò vibe of the port town. Orbetello, a WWF protected area, is surrounded by two lagoons decoratively inhabited by pink flamingos and white herons. It is lovely for an evening shopping walk after an aperitif at Giannella or at Feniglia beaches. Enjoy the wealth of Tuscany’s Maremma region: from wine tasting in excellent local wineries including the Antinori family’s Le Mortelle and Tenuta di Monteverro to visiting artistic gardens like The Tarot Garden created by modern artist Niki De Saint Phalle, consisting of a series of huge sculptures depicting the twenty-two Greater Arcana. In contrast, the nearby Capalbio is a medieval village, crowned by the imposing Aldobrandesca Fortress.
